The London Eye in the background
London had been on my bucket list for a long time and I am glad I finally made it out there this summer! We spent four days in London and one day on a trip out to Windsor Castle, Bath, and Stonehenge. Here are a few snaps from our trip along with a list of what we did and where we ate.

Day 1

Dishoom Kensington
We arrived at Heathrow around noon and we were starving! We took the tube into town, checked into our AirBnB, freshened up, and headed out for lunch at Dishoom in Kensington. We ordered Chili Chicken, Spicy Lamb Chops, Chicken Ruby, Garlic Naan, and Basmati Rice. Everything was so delicious! With full stomaches, we headed out to explore London!

Kensington Palace
Hyde Park

In my opinion the best way to explore a new city is on foot. We left lunch and walked towards Kensington Palace. We didn't have a chance to go inside but walking around the gardens was well worth it! We went through Kensington Gardens and straight into Hyde Park. There were some beautiful rose gardens in Hyde Park.

Buckingham Palace
Westminster Bridge
Westminster Abbey
We exited Hyde Park and walked to Buckingham Palace. Unfortunately the palace wasn't open for tours so we only got to enjoy it from the outside. We made our way through St James Park where I met the friendliest squirrel. Well to be quite fair, I was scared by the squirrel a bit because it jumped onto the fence right in front of me and stared me down, but immediately after it ran off and onto someones shoulder to be fed. It wasn't scared of people at all!

After our walk through St James Park we explored around the Westminster area where we saw Westminster Abbey, Parliament, Big Ben (under construction), and walked across Westminster Bridge. By the time we were done walking around Westminster we were exhausted from our long day of travel so we headed to our AirBnB in Kensington and called it an early night.

Day 2

The Churchill Arms
We slept in a little on our first full day in London because we were still exhausted from our long travel day. It felt good not to be in a rush. Our first stop of the day was a walk by the Churchill Arms. Unfortunately it wasn't open yet so we didn't get to go in for a drink, but it sure was pretty on the outside. From there we made our way to Portobello Road.

The crowd on Portobello Road on Saturday
At the corner of Portobello Road and Denbigh Terrace
It was Saturday so the Portobello Market was crowded! The entire street was a sea of people. I don't like such crowded places so we walked through as quick as we could and made our way to some of Notting Hill's quieter streets.

Colorful Houses on Hillgate Place in Notting Hill
Colorful Houses on Hillgate Place in Notting Hill
Everywhere you looked there were beautiful and colorful houses in Notting Hill. Hillgate Place was especially charming with its quiet streets and pretty homes.

Bob Bob Ricard
Bob Bob Ricard

For lunch we had reservations at Bob Bob Ricard in Soho and I must say it is a beautiful restaurant! We ordered the peppercorn steak, lobster Mac and cheese, truffle fries, cocktails, and the signature chocolate glory for dessert. The service was great and the food was good. It was one of the pricer meals we had in London and while we enjoyed our food and experience there were definitely other better meals.

Flowers outside of Liberty London
The British Museum
After lunch we walked down Carnaby street and did some window shopping at Liberty London before making our way to the British Museum.

At the museum we decided to see the main attractions including the Rosetta Stone, Pantheon Marbles, the Egyptian Mummies, Enlightenment Gallery, and the Great Hall.

We spent the rest of the evening bar hopping before having Fish and Chips at The Mayfair Chippy. For dinner we each had cod and I ordered the cheese and truffle chips - yum!

Day 3

View of Windsor Castle Gardens
We technically spent the majority of the day outside of London, but since it was only a day trip I am still including it in my recap. We decided on doing a bus tour of Windsor Castle, Bath, and Stonehenge.

At Windsor Castle we toured the State Apartments, walked along the North Terrace and saw the gardens, and saw the changing of the guards. I would have liked to go into St. George's Chapel, but since a mass was going on at the time of our tour they were not allowing visitors.

The Roman Baths

View of the River Avon in Bath
We made our way back to our bus and headed out to Bath. When we pulled up I instantly knew that I would love Bath. The city and country side surrounding it is so beautiful and the town itself was very quaint. We only had a few hours to spend in Bath and if I could do it again I would at least spend an entire day there. We spent our time doing a tour of the Roman baths, having lunch at The Cornish Bakery, popping into shops, and enjoying the view of the River Avon.

Stonehenge
When we arrived at Stonehenge it began pouring. We didn't let the rain stop us from walking the grounds. Honestly we did a quick lap around the ring before heading to the visitor center to get out of the rain. Out of our entire day trip, our visit to Stonehenge was my least favorite part of the day.

We made it back to London in time for dinner at Punjab in Covent Garden. I ordered the Lamb Vindaloo and it was spicy and delicious!

Day 4

The wining installation during Chelsea in Bloom 2019

J.Crew during Chelsea in Bloom 2019

Chelsea in Bloom 2019

When we were planning our trip I noticed that Chelsea in Bloom would be happening during our time there and I was beyond excited to check it out. Sight seeing + flower displays= yes please! I downloaded the map and Steven and I made our way down each of the streets to see what the different installations looked like. I was blown away by the intricacies of some of displays including the "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea" display at Hackett which I later learned ended up being the winner of Chelsea in Bloom!

Peggy Porschen in Chelsea
Maitre Choux Chelsea

After lots of walking, we decided to get dessert at Maitre Choux. We got a table along their flower wall, ordered coffee, and pastries. Everything we had was delicious!

View of Tower Bridge from The Tower of London

After exploring Chelsea we decided to go to the Tower of London. We toured all the different sections, but may favorite was the Crown Jewels! No photos were allowed but believe me the jewels were incredible!

Dinner at The Mayflower Pub

For dinner we decided to go to The Mayflower Pub. To get there we walked across Tower Bridge, through Butler's Warf, and along some residential streets before arriving at the pub. It was quite the walk and we probably should have taken the tube, but at least we arrived hungry at the pub! We enjoyed a delicious dinner of fish and chips and bangers and mash. We sat inside for dinner and it was very cozy. Before leaving we walked out onto the terrace for a view of the River Thames.

Mr. Fogg's Tavern
After dinner we took the tube to Covent Garden where were explored and did some bar hopping. I really enjoyed my drink at Mr. Fogg's Tavern.

Day 5

St. James's Park Lake
Our last day in London was actually at the very end of our trip. We took the morning train in from Paris and proceeded to drop off our things at our Airbnb. We loved our meal at Dishoom so much that we decided to eat there again, only this time it was at the Covent Garden location.  I am pretty sure we ordered all the same things since we loved it so much the first time around!

After lunch we walked around Knightsbridge, did some shopping at Harrods, explored Mayfair, and ended the day (and our trip) with beers at The Goat Tavern before heading home to pack. Overall I would say we had a very great time in London!

Goal Check In: Q2 of 2019

Sunday, July 7, 2019

The last few months have been crazy. Between working a lot more, traveling a lot, and dealing with some personal issues- the days and months have flown by. To be quite honest, my goals haven't been at the top of my priority list lately and I've felt the effects. As I started going through my list of goals I realized that I've let a lot slide and you know what? It's ok. Life is ever changing and sometimes you have to take a step back from what you would like to do to do what you need to do.

Daily Goals

  • Take my vitamins everyday

    • This has been a total fail. I am so bad at remembering to take my vitamins. Last quarter I wrote about putting my vitamins on my nightstand, but I never did that. This time I am going to actually give that a try. I've physically moved my vitamins to my night stand so there's no excuse there!

  • Create and stick to a morning and night time routine

    • With the changes to my work life in the last few months I haven't nailed down a good morning or night time routine. Things were a little chaotic for a few weeks since I was trying to get all my work done between summer trips. I was waking up early and staying up late working and not doing much else. This change in routine meant that I sacrificed working on other goals like working out and reading. Now that I have a better grasp of what my new work schedule will be like and I only have one more trip before things settle down, I am going to work towards creating the consistent routine I crave.

  • Drink eight glasses of water a day

    • Thankfully this is one goal that I haven't let slip!

  • Journal everyday

    • Still going strong with this goal too! I especially love to journal on days that are full of adventure and excitement and am glad that I will be able to look back on my entries for years to come.

Weekly

  • Create something

    • I've been creating a lot of things for work! But I haven't had time to do anything just for fun. My brother gave me an iPad Pro so I am hoping to spend some time drawing and creating just for fun.

  • Workout four days a week

    • I was doing really good up until mid May. In May I started working a lot more and was also traveling a lot so working out feel to the wayside. In June I only worked out 10 times and I felt the difference. I felt sluggish and puffy. I feel so much better mentally and physically when I workout and this is one I am putting back at the top of my list going forward.

  • Read two books a month

    • When I started writing this I thought that for sure I didn't make get 6 books in this quarter but I was wrong! I did it! I definitely read more at the beginning of the quarter than at the end but I got my books in so that's all that matters!

Monthly

  • Practice my photography skills

    • I took tons of photos this quarter on my iPhone while we were traveling but I made the decision to leave my camera behind. Traveling already means carry around a ton of luggage and adding in a bulky camera and multiple lenses just sounded miserable to me. While I may not have practiced with my DSLR camera I did work on getting better at composing my photos on my iPhone.

  • Cook a new meal

    • We still cook a lot and eat a majority of our meals at home but we haven't tried any new recipes. With our crazy schedules the last few months we've stuck with our tried and true recipes.

This Year

  • Complete Round 2 of Whole30

    • While I am not planning on doing another Whole30 I do still try to implement what I learned into my food choices.

  • Run a half marathon distance every quarter

    • I am not one of those people who can wake up and run a half marathon without training. I require consistent training to be able to run any kind of distance. The lack of training this quarter has made running even 3 miles a challenge for me. BUT - I've done it before so I know if I set my mind to it I can do it again and I will.

  • Travel to two places I’ve never been to

    • I am so happy we were able to travel so much this quarter! We traveled to London, Paris, and San Miguel de Allende. I'll be writing up my travel posts soon!

  • Finish Decorating our master bedroom and master bathroom

    • Honestly haven't worked on this at all. My time and energy hasn't been focused on decorating at all.

  • Refocus on my online business and create a plan for the year to come

    • While I still have my online shops up and continue to do customer support for them my focus has been transitioned to my freelance work. I am currently happy working for two incredible women with great business and hope to continue doing so!

Quarter 1 Goal Check in for 2019

How is it April already? January seemed to drag on forever and then I blinked and February and March were gone in an instant! The first quarter of this year has gone in a flash and if years past are any indication this next quarter will go buy even quicker. Last year I sat down every month and did a recap of where I stood on my goals for the year, but honestly I thought that a month was too short of a time to really give myself to work on my goals. This year I am evaluating where I stand goal wise quarterly, so let’s get started.

Daily Goals

  • Take my vitamins everyday

    • I started off strong with this one and then I completely failed. Every now and then I remember to take my vitamins but I am not consistent at all. Maybe it’s because I have my vitamins in my medicine cabinet and I don’t open that everyday? I am going to try keeping my vitamins on my nightstand this quarter to see if it helps me be more consistent.

  • Create and stick to a morning and night time routine

    • I thought a lot about what my ideal morning and night time routine would look like and also read about what other people do but I didn’t really set anything up for myself. I think I have been holding back because I feel like I have to create the perfect routine for myself right off the bat and that my routine has to be super productive. This is certainly a case where I am putting too much pressure on myself for no reason. My plan right now is to take a step back and take it slow. I am going to start with figuring out what kind of morning routine I would like to have and get that right before I move on to my night time routine.

  • Drink eight glasses of water a day

    • This was a goal that carried over from 2018 and I am happy that it has stuck. I honestly really only drink coffee and water so this is pretty easy to keep up with. There have been days where I forget to drink enough water and I feel the difference.

  • Journal everyday

    • Another goal carried over from 2018 and one that will be on my list forever! I use the Day One App and seriously love it! I can easily create a new entry, write up what I did that day, attach photos, and save it. Now that I have over a years worth of journal entries I even get little “on this day” notifications so I can go back and read what I did and how I felt a year ago. It will be exciting a few years down the road to see how my life has changed.

Weekly

  • Create something

    • While I haven’t been doing this every week I have been more conscience about trying to just sit down and let myself play and be creative. I think that in the past I have felt that this creative time has been a waste of time and that I could be doing something more productive but I have realized that letting myself be and not stress about if something will come out of this creative time that I open myself up for new ideas and inspiration.

  • Workout four days a week

    • When the year started I was in the final weeks of training for my first marathon. I was following a training plan and was trying to avoid over doing it so I only worked out according to my plan. The three weeks after the marathon were recovery weeks for me. Aside from stretching, I didn’t do a single workout for an entire week and then only did three workouts in the next two weeks. Mentally I was ready to get back to my workout routine but my body was saying otherwise. By mid February my body was finally feeling better and I started back up on my workout routine and have kept it up since.

  • Read two books a month

    • Y’all, I am doing so good with this goal! I read/ listened to 8 books in the first quarter of 2019. I am seriously in love with audio books, they make picking and cleaning my house way more enjoyable! I love being able to listen to a book while I am doing dishes or folding laundry or even when I am out on a walk. I have it on my to do list to write a round up of what I’ve read so far so I’ll talk about that in a future post.

Monthly

  • Practice my photography skills

    • Luckily for me both my sister and one of my oldest friends came to visit me during their spring breaks and I was able to practice my photography skills with them. My sister has her own adorable blog and I was tasked with taking a few photos for here while she was here. You can see the photos I took of here in her first Coffee Shop Diaries post here. My friend Alana and her family were in town and wanted photos in the bluebonnets so I got to play photographer for the day and took some beautiful family photos for them! It was fun to be back behind the camera in this setting and it also made me realize that I have a lot to learn when it comes to posing people!

  • Cook a new meal

This Year

  • Complete Round 2 of Whole30

    • Confession: We started and quit a week into our second round of Whole30. Let me start off by saying that I think doing Whole30 is very helpful in terms of figuring out how and what foods affect our bodies. I learned a lot during the round of Whole30 that we completed last year and still use what I learned in making food choices. You can read about my experience with Whole30 here. We were a week into our second round of Whole30 when our friends invited us out to dinner. Immediately the panic of figuring out if there was something Whole30 compliant at the restaurant set in. We wanted to go out with our friends and have a good time and were letting the restrictions of Whole30 put a lot of unnecessary stress on us. We ended up quitting that night. I may write some more about this later but for now I don’t really plan on doing another Whole30 this year.

  • Run a half marathon distance every quarter

    • I ran my first marathon on January 20, 2019 and that pretty much covered my long distance running for the first quarter of 2019. I have since started slowly training back up to run a half marathon in the second quarter.

  • Travel to two places I’ve never been to

    • Flights are booked for Mexico and Europe! I am so so excited! May and June of this year will be filled with lots of travel and I am thrilled! I can’t wait to explore San Miguel de Allende, London, and Paris!

  • Finish Decorating our master bedroom and master bathroom

    • I’ve gotten a few decorative pieces for our bedroom but haven’t finished yet. I’ve honestly been distracted with trip planning!

  • Refocus on my online business and create a plan for the year to come

    • It was sometime in January when I sat down to analyze and think through what I wanted to do for my online business and I realized something… I am just not that into it anymore. Well, at least not in its current iteration. I started this version of my business when we moved to Houston almost 6 years ago and I am bored and burned out on it. Because of the nature of digital downloads I will still have my shops up and my printables will still be available but I am not focused on developing new designs and items. If inspiration hits I will be adding new items but I am not focused on growing that side of my business anymore. I am not sure exactly what is next for me but like with everything else, I am sure I will figure it out!

How I Keep Track of My Favorite Recipes and Create My Weekly Meal Plan and Grocery List in Evernote

How I Create My Weekly Meal Plan and Grocery List in Evernote

I am honestly so happy that doing Whole30 last year lead me to create a meal plan and grocery list system that really works. I remember the days when I would go to the grocery store and aimlessly walk up and down each aisle placing things in my cart without a clear vision of what I was going to make or eat. I'm pretty sure most of the items making it into my cart weren't the healthiest, think frozen pizza and chicken nuggets... I am a literal face palm emoji just thinking of how bad my diet used to be! Not everything I would eat was bad, but it was pretty simple. I opted for simple meals since Steven was the cook in our relationship. Doing Whole30 last year during Steven's busiest work time forced me to roll up my sleeves and learn how to cook. Whole30 also forced me to create a meal plan system in order to keep track of all the compliant meals I was having to cook. While we completed Whole30 in April 2018, the system I developed during that time has stuck around.

For my meal plan and grocery list I use a notebook in Evernote to keep track of everything. If you are recreating this system it isn't necessary to have Evernote, but it does make it a lot easier when it comes to accessing your meal plan and grocery list on the go!

My Evernote Notebook Set Up

In Evernote I created a stack titled Food in which I have two notebooks: Recipes and Meal Plans . I keep the notebooks separate to make it easier to find exactly what I am looking for.

In Evernote I created a stack titled Food in which I have two notebooks: Recipes and Meal Plans . I keep the notebooks separate to make it easier to find exactly what I am looking for.

In the Recipe notebook I have one Template note:
  1. Recipe Layout Template

In the Meal Plan notebook I have two Template notes that I use week after week:

  1. Meal Plan Template
  2. Grocery List Template

Recipe Layout Template

How I Create My Weekly Meal Plan and Grocery List in Evernote

For each recipe, I keep track of a few specific details that make it easier for me to meal plan. These details are:

  • Recipe Title: When I title my recipe I preface it with the category that the recipe is in. The categories I use are: Breakfast, Beef, Poultry, Pork, Seafood, and Side Dishes. As I build out my recipe catalog I will include more categories.
  • Link to Original Recipe: A majority of the recipes I make have been created by someone else and can be found online. I like to keep track of where I got the recipe from incase I want to reference the original recipe since I do make modifications and change the ingredients list and instructions on my own copy of the recipe.
  • Cooking Information: This includes prep time, cook time, total time, and serving size.
  • Ingredients List: Because this is the section that I copy and paste into my meal plan template I use the recipe title again and include a link back to the recipe note with the ingredients listed below. Linking the title makes it easy for me to access the recipe from my Meal Plan for the week.
  • Instructions: I list step by step cooking instructions here.

Meal Plan Template

When creating my meal plan I like to be able to collect all the information I need in one place. I've created a table where I track the day of the week, date, each meal of the day, and what needs to be prepped on that day. Below that is where I paste a copy of the Ingredients List

When creating my meal plan I like to be able to collect all the information I need in one place. I've created a table where I track the day of the week, date, each meal of the day, and what needs to be prepped on that day. Below that is where I paste a copy of the Ingredients List from my recipe note for each recipe that I will be making that week. Since I've linked the title of the Ingredients List back to the Recipe note, I can easily go from my Meal Plan for the week to the Recipe that I will be cooking. This eliminates having to search for the recipe saving a little bit of time.

Once I have all my meals planned and the ingredients list for each recipe, I start working on my grocery list. The first step is to check off the ingredients that I already have in my fridge or pantry so that I am not buying more of the same and wasting food.

Grocery List Template

Once I have completed my meal plan, I write up my grocery list for the week. Since I shop at different stores for different things, I have my grocery list broken down by store and by section.

Once I have completed my meal plan, I write up my grocery list for the week. Since I shop at different stores for different things, I have my grocery list broken down by store and by section. The stores I shop at are: HEB, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Costco. A majority of my groceries will be from HEB, but I do occasionally go to the other stores for specific items.

Under HEB I have a list of categories that correspond to different sections of the store. I do this so that I can get everything from that section before moving on to another part of the store. This has made my grocery trips a lot faster than they used to be. The categories I use are:

  • Produce
  • Proteins & Meats
  • Dairy & Cold items
  • Snacks
  • Spices
  • Canned / Dry Goods
  • Drinks
  • Frozen
  • Other
These categories work for me because it is the route I take around my store. If you are recreating it you can organize your list in a way to works for you and the store that you shop at.

Conclusion

I've loved using this system to keep track of all my favorite recipes and to create my weekly meal plans and grocery lists especially because I can share the notebooks with my husband and we both have access to the information. I hope this helps you create your own Meal Plan/ Grocery List system! Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

I ran my first Marathon!

Tuesday, January 22, 2019

About a year ago I was sitting on my sofa watching the news coverage of the Chevron Houston Marathon. As I watched the runners crossing the finish line I couldn’t help but feel inspired by them. They set a goal, worked towards it, and accomplished it. I made the decision then and there to sign up for the 2019 marathon. Before I tell you about my training schedule and the actual marathon, let me give you a little back story about my history with running.

The Backstory

Let me start off by saying that I used to HATE running. I hated it so much that I signed up for band in middle school so that I wouldn't have to take any physical education classes- therefore I would not have to run.

During my first two years of college I did a lot of sitting and eating and not a lot of working out so the freshman fifteen quickly turned into the sophomore thirty. The summer after my sophomore year I decided to do something about my weight gain and so I turned to running. I woke up and would head out for a three mile run about four days a week. I couldn't immediately run three miles without stopping, but I worked my way up to it throughout the course of the summer. At this point I still hated running but I saw the weight coming off so I kept on doing it.

Fast forward to my last semester of college, I was so ready to be done with all of the homework and studying I had to do so for my elective credits I decided to sign up for a running class. You heard that right, I took and received college credit for a class where all I did was run... and I signed up willingly. I still didn't like to run, but in that moment I liked that for at least one class I wouldn't have to read until my vision went blurry or write until my hands were numb. I just had to run.

After college I would go on a run here and there but for the most part I avoided it. Anytime I would see some uptick in my weight I would turn to running to get me back on track.

It was the year of my wedding when I decided to start going to a 5:30am bootcamp four days a week in which two days were solely dedicated to running. I'll be honest, when I signed up I didn't know that all I would be doing was running two days a week, but nonetheless I stuck it out. During the five months leading up to my wedding I didn't miss a running class. Something strange also started happening... I started enjoying it. The class instructors were great. They paid attention and gave me pointers on my running form and they encouraged me and pushed me to run faster than I'd ever run before. It also helped that I was surrounded by lots of nice people who were also very encouraging. One of the instructors also told me that I should sign up for a half marathon because I was a good runner. I thought "Me? Yea that'll never happen."

A few months after my wedding we moved to a different neighborhood and I stopped going to my morning bootcamp. I kept working out and going to other classes at my new gym and for the first time in my life I missed running. Thankfully our new neighborhood is right off of a running trail so I quickly added running back into my life. As the new year approached I was thinking a lot about what goals I would set and with my bootcamp instructors words still in the back of my mind I decided that I would sign up for and run a half marathon in the new year.

So the new year came along and I was fully prepared to sign up to run the Houston Half Marathon in January 2019. But then watching the news coverage of the 2018 Marathon and seeing so many people complete the full marathon I changed course and decided to shoot for the moon!

Marathon Training

Over the course of a year I went on 147 runs which took 103 hours to complete for a grand total of 624 miles. What those numbers don’t show is that I spent a lot more time mentally preparing for every run. On the good days I thought “I can do this!” and on the bad it was more like “What was I thinking signing up for a marathon? I’m not a runner. I’m not going to be able to run that distance.” I’d made a deal with myself when I started training to make no excuses, so even on the bad days I laced up and hit the trail.

When I started my training journey the farthest I’d ever run was six miles and that was a struggle for me. With a year to prepare for the marathon I decided to slowly work my way up to different milestones. I'd gotten an Apple Watch for Christmas and downloaded the Nike Run Club App. The App lets you set your goal and creates a unique training schedule for you. With the App and my first 10k race scheduled, I started training.

I ran my first 10k race on February 24, 2018 and it was brutal. I distinctly remember being at mile four and cursing myself for thinking that I could run a full marathon when I was having such a difficult time running 6.2 miles. I pushed through my self doubt and finished the race at just under an hour.

After the 10k race, I continued my cycle of setting a goal for a longer distance and training for it. I did this to get to 15k and then to the half marathon distance.

I ran my first ever half marathon distance on July 15, 2018. It took me almost two and half hours to cover 13.1 miles and it was the hardest physical and mental activity I'd done to date. I remember being so incredibly sore and wondering if it was even possible for me to run further.

For the next month and a half I kept running but didn't have a set goal since official marathon training started on September 17.

The training plan that I decided to *mostly* follow was Hal Higdon's Marathon Training: Novice 1.  I say mostly because through week nine of marathon training I was cross training two to three days a week and running three days a week instead of the four running days prescribed by the training plan. From weeks ten through eighteen of training I stopped cross training and would run three days a week. I did this because the long runs were wearing me out and I needed more and more rest between training sessions.

Weeks ten through fifteen of training were the worst. You'd think that going from running 15 miles to running 20 miles in six weeks wouldn't be a big deal, but for me it was. At the time I was hitting a wall at 15 miles and it took so much mental effort to finish the 16 mile, 18 mile, and 20 mile runs. Not to mention that I started experiencing symptoms of sciatica the week of my 18 mile run.

My first attempt at running 18 miles was cut short. I started having a dull lower back pain that spread down my leg to my foot. My foot started to feel numb. I stopped running at mile seven to stretch in hopes that it would feel better. I ran two more miles before calling it for fear of an injury. During the next couple of runs I continued to experience those same symptoms. I wanted to see a sports doctor and the one I found didn't have an opening until after the marathon so I took a couple of days to rest and decided to get new shoes.

Some rest and new shoes seemed to fix the problem! I am the worst at keeping track of how many miles I put on my shoes and I am sure I'd needed new shoes for weeks if not months before I actually got a new pair. I sure won't be making that mistake again.

With my sciatica symptoms gone, I finished off my training strong.

Finally on January 20, 2019, all of my training was put to the test. I was nervous and excited to be on the race course surrounded by so many amazing people who had all trained to reach the same goal, including my dear friend Andrew Palmer. We were finally within hours of reaching our goals and having something to show for all our hard work. When I crossed the starting line I couldn’t help but be emotional. I was now one of those runners I looked up to just a year before. I was someone who’d set a goal, was actively working towards it, and I was absolutely going to accomplish it.

The energy of the crowd and spectators was contagious. I had a permanent smile plastered on my face for the first ten miles of the race. My family and friends where near mile seventeen of the course so getting to see them kept my spirits high. It was at mile twenty that I started to feel the dreaded wall sneaking up on me. I no longer had my family to look forward to seeing and I was entering a distance that I'd never run before. Self doubt crept in. Could I run 6.2 more miles? Would I have to stop and walk? Would my legs cramp up? For a few minutes I questioned if I would even finish the race. Then I decided to change my mindset. I started reciting running mantras to myself. "I think I can. I think I can." "It doesn't matter how slow you go as long as you don't stop." "She believed she could. So she did." "One mile at a time." "It's supposed to be hard. If it were easy everyone would do it." "The body achieves what the mind believes." Those mantras got me to mile twenty four. It was at that point that I decided to dedicate the next two miles to my grandparents. I said prayers for my grandparents that have passed and said a prayer that my last living grandmother would be around for years to come. I thought about all the wonderful memories I have shared with my grandparents and about how if they were there to see me they would be telling me that I could do anything I set my mind to.

The last quarter mile of the race went by in a blur. The crowds were cheering and the finish line was in sight. I felt energized and ran the last distance with the biggest smile on my face.

I finished my first marathon in 4:30:15. Even more important than my race time is that I went from thinking "Me? Yea that'll never happen." to proving that I can accomplish what I set out to do.

My Goals for 2019

Friday, January 11, 2019

I love starting the new year off fresh with new intentions, aspirations, and goals! Yes, I know I am late to the game with this post, but it's better late than never! Last year I set goals based on what I wanted to accomplish on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis and it worked well for me. I even kept track of my progress on a custom goal tracker I created for myself that I will share with you on a later post.

For 2019 I am sticking to what I know and setting goals the same way I did last year! Before I list off my goals, I am only including new additions to my list below. The goals I am carrying over from 2018 include: drinking eight glasses of water a day, journaling everyday, working out four days a week, and reading two books a month. Here we go!

Daily

  • Take my vitamins everyday

    • Now that I am thirty I feel like I need to be taking even better care of my health and that includes taking vitamins. If you are reading this mom- I am finally listening to you! I have never ever been very good at taking vitamins, trust me, my mom has tried getting me to take them for years, but this year I am making it a goal to take a multi vitamin every single day!

  • Create and stick to a morning and night time routine

    • I am a creature of habit and love sticking to a routine. Don't get me wrong, a break from the ordinary is very much exciting in some aspects of life, but when it comes to my morning and evening routines I'd like to have something set up that I can stick to that helps prepare and end my day the right way. As it is right now I don't have a set routine and I know that it is throwing me off my groove. I may not go back to 4am wake up calls like I used to, but I do want to establish a better routine that helps start my day off right and not rushed. I also want a better night time routine that will help me relax and hopefully get better sleep.

Weekly

  •  Create Something

    • Sometimes weeks go by where I feel like I have not expressed myself creatively. I'd like to take some time every week to create something for the fun of it. Whether that be painting, drawing, creating a digital pattern, putting together a memory book, or writing a blog post, I want to make sure to exercise my creativity on a weekly basis.

Monthly

  • Practice my Photography Skills

    • Did you know I once wanted to be a photographer? I blame my mom for always having a camera around. I've shot with film cameras, cameras that stored photos on floppy disks, and DSLRs. Over the last few years I haven't worked on my photography skills as much as I'd like too and I am hoping to get at least one practice day in a month.

  • Cook a new meal

    • Last year Steven and I cooked a lot and we developed a good list of weekly staples. It is so easy to stick to that routine, but it does get a little boring sometimes. This year I would like to try to make at least one new recipe a month, weather that be a meal that we can add to our weekly rotation or a cheat meal.

This Year

  • Complete round two of Whole30

    • Since completing our first Whole30 in April of 2018, you can read about that here, we've taken some of the lessons we've learned and implemented some Whole30 program rules into our weekly meal plan. Even though we try to eat clean 80% of the time, I do think there is a big difference in sticking to the program for 30 consecutive days, so we are going to do another round of it.

  • Run a half marathon distance every quarter

    • I spent 2018 training for my first marathon (happening January 20th!) and with no set race in the future, I don't want to lose all the hard work I put into running. Plus, I really love running! So for 2019 I want to reset and train to run a half marathon distance every quarter with hopefully each run being better than the last! Not to mention running will help keep me on track with working out four or more days a week.

  • Travel to two places I've never been to

    • I hate traveling. The physical act of traveling is exhausting, but I do LOVE to explore new places so traveling is just something I have to do. This year we are hoping to travel to a couple of fun places! One of them will be San Miguel de Allende for our friends wedding and another will be a trip to Europe. We haven't finalized where exactly in Europe we will be going, but I am pulling for London and Paris! We'll see! If all goes according to plan checking this goal of my list will be easy!

  • Finish decorating our master bedroom and master bathroom

    • Project #CasaKelley is slow going. We've been in our house for about 16 months and there isn't a single room that I would consider to be done. For starters, I had no clue what decorating direction I wanted to go in. Traditional? Modern? Eclectic? Farmhouse? SO MANY OPTIONS! Finally, last summer we started to get a couple of pieces for our master bedroom and things are coming together. Before moving onto the main part of the house I want to finish our master bedroom and bathroom because that is our sanctuary. I'm hoping this project is finished up early this year so I can move on to another room in the house.

  • Refocus on my online business and create a plan for the year to come

    • If there was one thing to say about my business in 2018 it's that I neglected it. My online shop remained open and I continued to respond to customer messages and take on custom orders, but I didn't put in the time and effort to design new digital downloads or keep up with my marketing efforts. This year I want to refocus and create a plan for my business. Last year I wrote about my business being in a transition phase and it's about time I tackle that and figure out what is next!
